HRD Issues The List Of The Top Ten Universities Of India.

“India Rankings 2016”, the list of top hundred universities of India has been released by Union Human Resource Development Minister, Smriti Irani at Vigyan Bhawan on Monday. This first-of-its-kind indigenous ranking framework for higher education institutions has come out with a list of top 100 Universities and Institutes in Engineering, Management and Pharmacy. The Indian Institute of Science has been ranked the best university in India.

Smriti Irani said the effort is to make this ranking system an annual affair and more categories will be added so that students can know about an institute before taking admission. The new ranking framework has been drafted to offer an Indian context to educational aspirations and needs. This will help institutions that conduct research in languages other than English and are focused on inclusive education, two factors that are overlooked by international agencies.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has ranked universities on the basis of following parameters –

  1. Teaching, learning and Resources

  2. Outreach and Inclusivity

  3. Research Productivity

  4. Graduation Outcome

  5. Perception

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is ranked as country’s third best university followed by Hyderabad Central University which stands at rank 4. For engineering institutions, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras ranks first, followed by IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur and for management studies, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore beats IIM Ahmedabad to rank number one.

All 122 centrally-funded institutions — including all central universities, IITs and IIMs — participated in the first round of ranking. The framework is primarily divided into two categories: Category A covered institutions with academic autonomy and a greater focus on research and category B comprised colleges and centres affiliated to a university and more focused on teaching.

“The Ranking framework will empower a larger number of Indian Institutions to participate in the global rankings, and create a significant impact internationally too. I see this as a sensitization process and an empowering tool, and not a tool for protection.” quoted by the HRD Minister.
