With the recent win against one of our formidable foes Pakistan, India is possibly peaking at the right time after a dismal two and half months down under. The win did kindle my memories and made me go back to one particular day. Yes, 2nd April 2011. I might even forget my close friends birthday, but not this one. It’s astonishing to know that time has run rather quickly. Four years have passed by and now we are combating in the toughest of conditions to get back the smile on the faces of 1.25 billion people.
It was not a very calm Sunday. Prayers and poojas were on form mid night and the win against Pakistan at Mohali lead all roads to Mumbai and the expectations were at the zenith. The match was at the home of Indian cricket. The new Wankhade was the host of the 2011 final and it just could’nt get bigger. The one thing that did not change was ‘Sachin Sachin’. Emotions were nerve wracking.
There was drama even before the game began. The toss was like a Mani Ratnam Film. No one heard what the call was and eventually the lankans won it and we were set to bowl. Batting first on a big game is always a big bonus. The opening pair of Zaheer and Sreesanth and the start provided was truly brilliant. Then came in the experienced pair of Sanga and Mahela and it was terrible to watch such good cricket to be played against India. Sri Lanka eventually ended on 274 from 50 overs with Perera hitting a six over square leg.
This end got to the start of an endless fasting. Heart beats started to increase and my fingers were depleted of nails. Sehwag and Sachin opening the Indian batting in a world cup final. I must add looking at these two was heart rendering. There were visuals of These two tearing apart the Lankan attack. But things did not go as I thought. Viru out on the second ball and the little master on the 6 over. This was disastrous for the team and a billon people. There were worried faces. There was silence on the streets, homes and almost right throughout the country. Even a non-cricket follower was worried.
The players who had played a blinder of an innings. Dhoni and Gambhir. They were at the form of their lives. More than wanting to play well there was hunger and fire inside them. I don’t remember what exactly happened. We were cruising and I do not remember what I was doing. Dhoni was trashing and I was standing for the entire game at my uncles place in Chennai. It came down to 5 runs from 13 balls and Kulasekara was bowling to Dhoni. The lines that were ringing in my ears were ‘ Dhoni finishes of in style. Unbelievable scenes here at the Wankhade’. I saw a flight going beneath me..hahhaa…. I was flying.
These are the moments that no Indian will forget and are hoping that we will do it this time around. There is immense pressure on the team and the fans. The conditions will be tough and hoping for the best to happen.
We won’t give it back!
Chak De India 😀
