Jagmohan Dalmiya-A giant in Indian Cricket.

Jagmohan Dalmiya , President of the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) , passed away on the evening of 20th September at a city hospital in Kolkata due to a massive cardiac arrest and internal organ failure.

Dalmiya was admitted to Birla Hospital in Kolkata after he complained of chest pain and had been put in the Intensive Care unit (ICU)  on 17th September.In the following days, his health deteriorated and Dalmiya underwent Coronary Angiography. A medical bulletin which was issued after the Angiography expressed “Multiple lesions were observed with total occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery”. Dr. Anil Mishra of Birla Hospital stated that he was suffering from massive gastrointestinal tract hemorrhage and despite all the efforts of the doctors , he succumbed to his bleeding.

Jagmohan Dalmiya was not keeping well and was not able to participate in the day to day functioning of the BCCI for quite some time. His secretary Anurag Thakur conducted all the meetings and presided over his work on his behalf.

Ever since his death, the entire cricket fraternity paid their last tributes to one of the most capable administrators world cricket as seen.His funeral was attended by Indian Cricket legend, Sourav Ganguly and also many dignitaries from India.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee also paid condolences to the Dalmiya family on twitter. Mamata Bannerjee (Chief Minister of West Bengal), Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Former Australian Cricketer Ian Chappell also took social media to pay their tributes.

A Giant amoung Administrators.
Jagmohan Dalmiya will be remembered as one of the most effective sports administrators from India.What made Dalmiya special is his dedication and repulsive attitude to controversies. Dalmiya joined BCCI in 1979 as Bengal’s cricket representative. His first victory was perhaps , along with Indrajit Bindra and NKP Salve, successfully winning the bid to host the 1987 cricket world cup with a huge majority. The International Cricket Council approved the proposal which received opposition by the English who hosted the previous three world cups. This ensured a rotational system in hosting the cup which exists even today.

One of the best administrators the game has ever seen, Jagmohan Dalmiya passed away.

He was unanimously elected as the President of the ICC in 1997 and became the first Asian and non-cricketer to hold the prestigious post.His achievements as President include granting Bangladesh test status and helping ICC generate more revenue , strengthening ICC’s holdover the World Cup.The World Cup was officially renamed as ICC World Cup in the 1999 edition and Jagmohan Dalmiya as one of the major contributors towards it.

After his stint as ICC President , he went on to become the President of the BCCI for the first time in 2001.In June 2013, he was appointed as the interim president of the BCCI after N. Srinivasan stepped aside till the probe on Srinivasan’s son-in-law’s alleged involvement in spot-fixing in the 2013 Indian Premier League was completed.He was elected for the second term as BCCI President in March 2015. His unfortunate death was mourned by the entire cricket fraternity. Let us pray that his soul rests in peace.
