I took birth with my euphonious cry
And the nurse congratulated my family
“You gave birth to an ANGEL!!!”
Some were ecstatic while others grieved my birth
I debuted as a girl on this life-stage
Was this my fault?

I amused my parents with my delicate smile
They said, “Look at her alluring deep eyes”
My baby steps rejuvenated their lives
But this mirage of my charisma soon took the shape of reality
A poignant reminder of my female existence
The love was taken away
The gloomy ambiance which my naive heart could not understand
I was a girl and this caused the heartache
Was this my fault?

I was a talented girl
I passed my school with flying colors
Adept in studies, dance, artwork and cooking
I still could not impress them
I could not be an all rounder
Was this my fault?

I was elegant, serene, benign and adorable
But somehow this troubled them
Never allowed to see the world
I yearned to gallop round the bountiful earth
Too afraid to offend and hurt them
I kept quiet but never complained
Was this my fault?

I wanted to study further and build my career
But in my ambitious dreams I forgot that I was still a girl
My fantasies were churned and tossed
Deeply humiliated by my presence, I cursed the day I was born
But then I apprehended

It was not my fault
It has never been my fault
I do not want to play the blame game
Taking birth as a girl was not my fault
But mutely suffering torture was indeed my fault
Unable to endure these successive rapes
I snapped the barriers of this misogynist society
For the first time I took decisions for myself
It was not a piece of cake
But I never allowed fear to conquer my morale
And yes I am still working…
