In the words of Isarelmore Ayivor, “7 things negativity will do to you. It will…
1. Demean your value
2. Destroy your image
3. Drive you crazy!
4. Dispose your dreams!
5. Discredit your imagination!
6. Deframe your abilities and
7. Disbelieve your opinions!
Stay away from negativity!”
The above quote sums up “negativity” about right. Negativity can be said to be a disease which is extremely contagious unless your will power is strong or if you have a badass Captain America-like shield called “positivity”. Due to a busy and hectic lifestyle that we find ourselves surrounded with nowadays, negativity is a very common trait in people. And it is such a nasty organism that once it creeps into the mind of a person it slowly breeds more and more. People are often negative when they are not confident about themselves and the life-threatening situation in front of them is really difficult to handle. Sometimes, people also have an inferiority complex which leads to negativity. They constantly undermine their self-worth. This undermining is so strong at times that they often fill up their heads with verbal trash. This addiction to negativity builds deep roots in our brains and interfere with our best-laid plans. Mind you, it can also mentally destroy people at times.
Researches have shown that negativity attracts negativity. It means that a negative attitude often invites negativity in our lives. Our thought process plays an important role in this concept. The thing is when our thoughts are infested with negativity, the outcomes of our work is negative.
Say, a student is preparing for a qualifying exam but his head is filled with thoughts of being a failure then his negative attitude will show in his work. He might be expecting a certain percentage for himself but his negativity leads him to lesser marks than he anticipated. When his mind was full of negativity, his exam preparation suffered and hence he could not score as much as he wanted. On top of that, such a negative person will keep on blaming himself and invite further negativity in his life instead of surrounding himself with positive thoughts rather than trying harder the next time.
A documentary on “The Secret- Law of Attraction” makes it crystal clear that when we think about something and put our heart and mind into it, the universe aligns itself to present us with the outcome we are expecting. What they mean to say with this statement is that what you think sends out a vibe in the universe attracting it to you. Hence, if you are being negative, expect the whole day to be troublesome and not in your favour. On the other hand, being positive will have you smiling throughout the day even if some things do not run the way you expected.
In medicine there is a term known as “Nocebo Effect”. Wikipedia describes this effect as the adverse reaction experienced by a patient who receives such a therapy. This concept also appears in our everyday life and interactions with people. As we already know that like attracts like, ergo, negativity attracts negativity and positivity attracts positivity. When we are ourselves positive, we tend to spread positivity in our interactions with people and hence it leaves people on both the sides positive and happy.
This is why it is necessary to adapt a positive life and attitude. In various studies, it is seen that people who are more positive tend to be healthier and live longer.
How exactly can we defend negativity and envelope ourselves with a positive vibe? The first step in this direction can be surrounding yourself with positive thinking people. As negativity is contagious, so is positivity. Who we spend time with has a great impact on us. Positive people are always optimistic and greet failure as just another try for success. Hence, when we interact with positive people, our thought process gradually cleanses and starts absorbing that positivity. This is one of the best ways of shutting down negativity.
Another solution can be focusing on solutions. Instead of thinking what should have been think of what could be. Don’t fret over something going wrong because that is the best culture for breeding negativity. Instead, think about the solution for your problem and more importantly think positive! Always keep yourself surrounded with patience and kindness. It is the best formula for positivity because being good to yourself and others show that you are filled with positivity and optimism.
Letting go of painful experiences from the past is also a way of inviting positivity. This is because when we don’t dwell in the past, we are happy and this leads to a happier present. Being happy, or rather content, is the best way to stay positive.
When we eventually start being positive our lives change for the better. The mere advantages of positivity are a happy and long life, good health and a sense of being prepared for the ups and downs of life. Our lives are full of good times and bad times. But being content with our lives is what that matters in the end. Being positive is just the way to do it.
